Er, hi. Remember me? It’s been quite a while. During my unintentional hiatus, I did the following: finished my master’s (woo!); started my own business; entered a writing contest; and various other things.
To make up for my absence, I’m going to review an excellent film in an entirely different genre: 1946’s Notorious. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, this suspenseful masterpiece involves a ring of Nazi spies in postwar Rio. American secret agent Devlin (Grant) recruits Alicia Huberman (Bergman) to infiltrate the ring and seduce the Nazi leader’s secrets out of him. The problem is that Alicia and Devlin fall for each other in the process of the mission, which becomes increasingly perilous to Alicia’s health, physical, emotional, and mental. But when her mission is discovered by the Nazis, Alicia must put aside her personal problems in her struggle to stay alive and make it out of Rio.
Here’s the original trailer for this display of Hitchcock’s signature mixture of wit and suspense. Are you ready to fight the remnants of the Nazis? Let’s go!
